Connecting a new data center to the electric grid can take years, creating a critical bottleneck for AI infrastructure buildout. A strategy called 'flex' — where data centers contractually agree to curtail their power draw during peak grid stress events — is emerging as a way to win faster approval from utilities. The approach trades occasional operational constraints for queue priority, a deal that grid operators increasingly find attractive.
